Tips to prepare for glam maternity photos in Phoenix

Maternity photo session I Phoenix Arizona

    1. Know your style! This is the most important aspect to preparing for  glam maternity photos in Arizona. By knowing your maternity style you know what kind of photographer you’re looking for. If you love big, frilly, sparkly maternity gowns. I am your girl. I have over 100 gowns. Ranging from big and frilly to sleek and subtle. It is important to know what dress style you want for your maternity photos. Not sure a studio maternity session is your style? We can take the glam outside!
    2. Book a hair and makeup artist. This is CRUCIAL for glam maternity photos. Niv had her hair and makeup done in our studio by one of our best makeup artists, Gatsby. Gatsby has been with my studio for over a decade. I cannot tell you how much better every client feels when they have their hair and makeup done. This is something that really helps with the overall feel of a glam maternity photoshoot. You can have your maternity makeup done in studio prior to your session and it can be booked directly with me!
    3. Jewelry is something I love to add some extra sparkle. Whether you bring your own or utilize key items we have at the studio. I believe that more is ALWAYS okay. From dangle earrings, stacked bracelets, elegant necklaces. I love the shine that jewelry creates. And not only do I love jewelry. I love body shimmer as well! I have a variety of body shimmer available for your session.
    4. Shoes are a great way to top off a beautiful glam look for your glam maternity photos in Arizona. I love a good stiletto or wedge heel to complete a look. In my maternity photography studio I have a collection of shoes to finish your look. If heels aren’t your thing, that is okay too! Going barefoot is a beautiful option too. Another fun option is boots! You can pair a beautiful gown with a pair of fun boots to create a look that is unique to you.
    5. Trust us – and yourself. At the start of every session I always ask if you have a side of your face you prefer. Practice poses in the mirror. When in doubt, trust the way we pose you. I know that it may seem and feel super awkward, however I promise you I always want you to look your best. I always recommend taking a look at past blogs

When to book your studio maternity session

  • Simple Maternity Sessions in Arizona

    Simple Maternity Sessions in Arizona

Simple maternity sessions in Arizona are one of my favorite things to shoot. Where the focus is on you, your partner, and kids if you have any others you are adding in! 14 years ago I began my journey to become a leading newborn photographer in Arizona . Naturally, that lead me to outside maternity sessions in Phoenix. Which then brought me to studio maternity sessions. Over the years I’ve toyed with various styles. Eventually that landed me in the beautiful world of simple maternity sessions. The most important aspect of my career to me is to provide high quality images to my client that will resonate for a lifetime. That means I also have to provide high quality dresses, outfits, and other items for you to wear during your maternity sessions. This chiffon is the best of the best when it comes to fabric for your maternity session. You can find this high quality chiffon fabric in my shop if you’re looking to create a similar look for your clients maternity sessions in Arizona.

Here are the technical aspects of this maternity image. While the image itself is fairly simple, there are quite a bit of photography tools you need to create it! You can find the lights on my amazon storefront

    • This image is shot with two strobes. I use Godox AD400 pro.
    • I use two strip boxes facing the paper at a 45 degree angle.
    • This is shot on savage seamless white paper – size 107″
    • I use the soulmate presets – SMAL01 particularly!
    • V flat with white side to camera right to reflect onto my clients face.

If you’re not into brighter pregnancy pictures, we can go moody as well! Over the last decade I have focused on being able to provide a variety of looks for your maternity session in Arizona. Meaning you can have a bright white set up as well as a dark black and gray set up as well. Diversity is one of my favorite things when it comes to pregnancy photoshoots. I love pairing a black outfit on a dark gray backdrop for a mood pregnancy picture.

Here are the technical aspects of these images,

    • I used an 86″ PLM with two diffusers on a Godox AD400 Pro.
    • The black side of the V-Flat for the image on the left in front of fashion gray seamless paper by Savage.
    • My light is on camera left and angled at 45 degrees towards my client.

And now for something completely different. These images are simple, powerful, and COLORFUL! These images are so much fun. These are shot with colorful gels on top of my strobe lights. I use a variety of colors to make something beautiful and different for each client. The best part is that all of these looks can be achieved within a single maternity session. • Pregnancy Pictures in Phoenix

    Pregnancy Pictures in Phoenix

There is no shortage of places to take your pregnancy pictures in Phoenix. So if you’re here, I am glad you found me and honored to be considered for such a beautiful moment in your life. In this blog post I am going to over black and white maternity pictures. Black and white is popular for pregnancy pictures this year it seems! Let’s discuss the best way to style your pregnancy pictures in Phoenix and how we can help you achieve the Phoenix maternity session of your dreams.

The best chiffon fabric for pregnancy pictures.

I love chiffon fabric for maternity sessions. This fabric is so versatile. We can show as little or as much of your body as you are comfortable with. I love using a white fabric on a dark backdrop when we are capturing black and white maternity pictures. The contrast really makes you stand out! On the opposite end of the spectrum, using a white backdrop (or a light gray) is also a very lovely choice. If you’re looking for the best place to buy chiffon fabric for maternity sessions – you can find it in my shop!

Best outfits to wear for black and white maternity pictures

Chiffon fabric is only the start! There are so many wonderful outfits you can wear to make your black and white maternity pictures pop. My second favorite choice is a black (or dark colored) body suit. I love this one in particular. This fits a wide range of moms, from medium to XL! You can also find this perfect maternity bodysuit in my shop. Pregnancy pictures in Phoenix have come a long way over the last decade. From oversized outfits that don’t flatter your body – to this! Such a glow up. This is a great example of using two different color backdrops to create different vibes for your pregnancy photoshoot.

I also love our two piece dresses. This is so nice to be able to show off some of your belly while keeping things a little covered.

    Nude pregnancy pictures in Phoenix

Last but not least – you don’t have to wear anything at all! This is great against a backdrop that is going to be opposite of your skin tone. So if you have fair skin you’ll want a dark backdrop. If you’re on the darker side, opt for a lighter backdrop. This is to ensure that you stand out. Which is what we want you to do in your pregnancy pictures.

  • What to bring to your Phoenix senior portraits

What to bring to your Phoenix senior portraits

Planning your Phoenix senior portraits can be so much fun! But also, a bit stressful if we are being honest. One moment you’re taking their newborn photos and the next you’re packing them up for college. It’s such a bittersweet moment for parents. And so exciting for your kids! I love being able to capture this milestone for my families.

There is a lot that goes into planning the perfect senior portrait session. I’m here to help you plan your graduation pictures. Today I am going to give you a list of the most important items to bring to your Phoenix senior portraits. This blog will showcase one of my most recent seniors, Ava! Ava is graduating this year and heading to Michigan in August. She received a full ride scholarship to play women’s flag football! I thought that was so cool. While going to school she is going to majoring in sports management. Since Ava is going to school to focus on sports, she brought her football.

    1. Bringing things like your football to your senior session is a great way to let their personality shine.
    2. Bringing your cap and gown to your Phoenix senior portraits is always a must! If you do not have one yet, we have them in varying sizes available for your senior. If you’re a photographer and offer senior sessions, I highly recommend having them for your clients. You can find them on my amazon storefront!
    3. Bring your lipstick to touch up your lips as that goes the fastest during your senior portraits!

Outfit inspiration for senior pictures in Phoenix

Ava did 4 outfits with her to her senior session. 4 is the max amount of outfits you can bring for a 1 hour senior session. In addition to the 4 outfits, we also did the cap and gown!  I recommend a variety of looks. We started off with this casual look of jeans and a white tank top for her Phoenix senior portraits. If you’re looking for more outfit inspiration for your senior portraits, you can always check out my Pinterest board.

After that we moved on to this ADORABLE black dress with the cowboy boots. Being in Arizona, cowboy boots are almost a must when you’re shooting at Lost Dutchman State Park.

Ava really wanted a variety of looks and LOVED the film look so we did our best to incorporate lots of movement and blur with this next boho inspired look.

And Ava’s last (and favorite) look was this beautiful two piece silk set. This was truly SO beautiful on her! It can be hard to find outfit inspiration for you Phoenix senior portraits, but Ava really nailed it here. When you book a portrait session with me, I walk you through all of the outfit selection!

We went with more of a film vibe for this portion of her senior pictures. You can really see how different the light is at the beginning of a session vs. the end! I always recommend January – March the year your senior is graduating to capture your senior pictures.

  • Where to find fun mini sessions in Phoenix for kids

Where to find fun mini sessions in Phoenix for kids

I love hosting fun mini sessions in my Phoenix studio for kids (and family!). At the end of the day I want pictures to be a good experience for the whole family. I want the kids to have fun. I don’t want mom to worry about outfits or planning. And I want dads (specially dads!) to smile and enjoy themselves. I host over a dozen mini sessions every year geared towards families and kids. Planning a mini session can be a lot of work – but this one is truly so much fun. For families, kids, and even couples! Booking a photography session has never been easier.

Mini sessions can be a great way to capture milestones or just every day pictures. This month we did confetti minis . Lets take a look at some of our favorite images from this months fun mini sessions in Phoenix.

    Ideas for fun mini sessions.

I love mini sessions that are interactive. Lots of movement, color, and emotion. These are particularly fun because confetti is not hard to clean up, doesn’t stain, and is SO much fun to throw! Mini sessions like these are great for kids 6 months and up. When they’re able to sit by themselves (or at least supported!)

Baby during confetti mini session in Phoenix photography studiochild playing during mini session in Phoenix studio

Parents love to use these for first birthday photo sessions. They are such a great way to document your kiddos milestones. Plus, what kid doesn’t love throwing confetti all over?! If you’re a photographer and want to set these up for your client, here is how!

I use a mixture of three different types of confetti for my mini sessions. You can find them all on my amazon storefront link – along with everything else I used to create this mini session!

What to wear for studio portrait sessions?

You have a few options when it comes to what to wear for your portrait session with my studio. I offer an extensive client closet for kids ages 10 and under. Key items for kids 10+. Shirts for dad. And Mom? You get the most! I have over 100 items for moms in my studio. Your fun mini session in Phoenix is going to be SO stress free, I promise you that. Using my client closet takes so much off of your plate! However that does not mean you have to use it. Here are some of the most important things to remember when putting your outfits together.

    1. Wear what YOU love. When you wear what you love, you look happier and confident. That is our goal!
    2. When it doubt, bring extra items and I can help you put it together.
    3. I love color as much as I love neutrals. You will never find me requiring you to wear all neutral colors. If color is your vibe, do it!
    4. Make sure your clothes fit properly. Too big or too small can hinder how you move (and feel) during your session.
    5. Make sure your items are clean and wrinkle free. I do have a steamer available at the studio! However stain removal during editing is an additional fee.

  • Where is the best place to take senior pictures in Phoenix?

Where is the best place to take senior pictures in Phoenix?

I absolutely love being a Phoenix senior photographer. I love seeing these almost-adults with so much excitement for their future! This year my oldest daughter graduates (the first of my 5 kids!) and I am so excited to take her senior pictures at some of my favorite Phoenix locations. Your graduation pictures are some you will never forget. Today we are going to talk about my favorite spot – the salt river! I’ve been a Phoenix family photographer for 14 years. Some of my very first kiddos I photographed are now graduating too. It feels so surreal!

Girl in red dress posing on rock at salt river in Phoenix Arizona for senior session Girl in red dress posing on rock at salt river in Phoenix Arizona for senior session

Where can I find a Phoenix senior photographer?

Right here! While it’s been a few years since I have offered senior photography, I brought it back last year and am so happy I did. It’s so important to me to love what I photograph. For a while, it wasn’t seniors. Then I had some really amazing families reach out to ask me to photograph their seniors. And I am so glad that I did. Because of those sessions, I decided to bring back being a Phoenix senior photographer permanently.

When you’re looking for a senior photographer for your Phoenix, Arizona graduate here are some things to keep in mind. It’s important your photographer can make your senior comfortable. I have over 14 years working with kids of all ages. This means I’m able to relate and talk with kids of any age. I’m often told how easy my senior sessions are and how much fun their graduate had!

What do I bring to a senior session?

As your go-to Phoenix senior photographer here is what I recommend you bring to your senior session.

    1. 1-3 outfits that really feel like you. Parents this is important. If you want your graduate to feel comfortable, they need to feel like themselves. Their session will not go as well as you hope if you stuff them in an outfit they hate.
    2. Showcase your hobbies or extracurriculars. If you are going to school on a scholarship for sports, bring some sports stuff! Going for art? Bring your paint brushes! If your senior loved to read, bring a stack of books.
    3. If you have your cap and gown, that is great! You should absolutely bring your cap and gown. However if you don’t have it yet, I have a few available for you to use for your senior session.
    4. Girls, bring lipstick touch ups. Hair brush, hair spray, baby wipes! Boys, you still need to bring a brush too!
    5. Inspiration! While I never ever copy another photographers work, I love to see what type of poses inspire you.

When is the best time to take senior portraits in Arizona?

Arizona is a different beast than anywhere else in the country. While a lot of senior opt for summer time senior sessions, Phoenix graduates should focus on fall and winter. One of the best things about Arizona is that we have so much variety in our scenery for your senior portraits. We can travel to Flagstaff or Sedona. If you’re a beach person, we can even travel to San Diego for your senior session!

The majority of our seniors book early in their senior year for October through March. That leaves enough time to get them back for announcements and graduation gifts. Graduation announcements are a thing we also offer with your senior session in Phoenix!

Five Pros and Cons of Mini Sessions: A Comprehensive Guide

Mini sessions in Phoenix can be the greatest experience for some families. However for some families, mini sessions are not the best choice. This blog is going to cover the pros and cons of mini sessions. How you can make them work as well as  the alternatives to them if they aren’t the best fit for your family. Mini sessions in Phoenix are short photography sessions held either in studio or outside. Often they are styled for a specific theme but sometimes are simply just a short family portrait session. Mini sessions can be for family sessions, maternity sessions, senior sessions, newborn sessions, cake smash sessions, milestone sessions. Really anything can be a mini session. That doesn’t mean everything should be a mini session. Let’s dive into how we do mini sessions in Phoenix at my photography studio.

Sisters painting during photography session in Phoenix mini session

    1. They Can Be A Fun and Engaging Experience

Parents often love mini sessions in Phoenix because they are short and fun. This means kids can almost always stay engaged for the 5-15 minutes allowed for the session. My studio hosts various minis throughout the year and they’re all geared towards families. For example our confetti mini, paint with me mini, and ice cream minis. These are all things you’d expect a child to really love doing. However you really need to know your child. If you have a child that needs time to warm up, and you don’t want to be in the pictures with them, mini sessions in Phoenix may not be right for your family.

We all know it can be tooth and nail to get kids (and husbands) to cooperate during a photoshoot. Because these mini sessions in Phoenix are unique and engaging sessions, we find that they end up walking away having so much fun. More importantly, wanting to come back and do it again!

    2. Mini sessions Are Affordable

One of the highlights about mini sessions for Phoenix parents is that they are a lower cost than a full session. Mini session packages range from $250-$450 depending on the session. Some sessions are highly styled and include extensive prop collections. When those minis take place (for example Santa sessions in Phoenix or other holiday mini sessions) you can expect a higher session fee with that. However, you still save so much money by doing a 5-15 minute session rather than a 60-90 minute session. Now, if you have a large family and need a 60 minute session on the mini session set that is always an option! Be sure to send us a message for those mini session options.

    Christmas mini sessions

    3. Time Efficiency

Mini sessions in Phoenix are offered throughout the day, making them incredibly flexible and easier to fit into your busy schedule. Because these sessions are only 15 minutes long, there’s no need to dedicate an entire hour or two at the studio. That can be especially convenient for parents with tight schedules. Parents in Phoenix particularly appreciate the ability to schedule mini sessions around their child’s nap time. As well as work commitments, or other activities like sports. This flexibility ensures that families can get professional photos without disrupting their daily routine.

Additionally, the shorter length of the sessions means that fewer photos are typically captured, which leads to a much quicker turnaround time for receiving your final gallery. Instead of waiting 3-4 weeks as you might with a traditional 60-minute session, you can often expect to receive your mini session gallery within just 7 days, allowing you to enjoy your photos sooner.

While this is a huge perk for families looking for fast results, there are some downsides to consider. The sessions are brief and scheduled back-to-back, so if you have a child who is shy or uncooperative, there’s limited time to help them adjust or calm down. This means that if your child isn’t immediately comfortable or interested in participating, you may not have as much time to capture the perfect shot as you would in a longer session. Overall, while mini sessions are great for those looking for a quick and convenient photoshoot; it’s important to be mindful of the short duration and the need for quick adjustments.

baby smiling in milestone portrait at phoenix portrait studio mini session in phoenix

    4. Less Personalization in your mini sessions

Themed photoshoots are often tied to specific occasions or holidays, such as Christmas, Halloween, or back-to-school. Which not only create a sense of nostalgia and excitement but also allow for the opportunity to produce unique and memorable images. These themes can infuse the session with creativity, as they often come with specific colors, props, and atmospheres that help capture the essence of the moment, making the photos feel special and meaningful. Additionally, incorporating a variety of locations and set designs into these themed shoots keeps the experience fresh and engaging, offering new visual stimuli that can inspire different moods or styles of photography.

Whether shooting in a festive location decorated for a holiday or switching between indoor and outdoor settings. The change in environment adds excitement and versatility to the photos, ensuring that the final results are dynamic and visually interesting.

The combination of themed elements and diverse settings not only elevates the creativity of the shoot but also allows for a broader range of expressions and moods, making the experience more enjoyable for both the photographer and the client while also leading to photos that stand out and feel truly one-of-a-kind. Mini sessions are not going to be perfect for any occasion however. Mini session sets are not good for those who are wanting something personalized. These are sessions perfect for Phoenix parents who want a styled mini session without having any fuss of planning their own custom session.

baby smiling in milestone portrait at phoenix portrait studio mini session

    5. Limited Time for Posing

Mini sessions in Phoenix have shorter photoshoot duration can limit the opportunity for variety in poses and locations. This is because there’s less time to experiment with different angles, backdrops, and creative shots. This can result in a more repetitive set of images, with fewer options for the client. Additionally, a tight timeline may make clients feel rushed, preventing them from fully relaxing into the session. Without sufficient time to adjust their body language and become comfortable in front of the camera, clients might appear stiff or unnatural in the photos. This can lead to missing out on more candid, authentic moments that typically make the best shots. Mini sessions are best for clients who have worked with us before and understand how we give direction during our mini sessions.

Maintaining cleanliness in a newborn studio is a meticulous process. From washing countless props and blankets to sanitizing every surface, ensuring a germ-free environment is essential. At my newborn studio, we maintain a strict no-shoes policy past the entrance to keep outside contaminants out. If clients prefer to keep their shoes on, shoe coverings are available, but this policy is non-negotiable. After all, the newborn studio is where the baby will spend a significant amount of time, so cleanliness is critical.

Upon your arrival, we ask that all visitors sanitize their hands to maintain a sterile environment. We wash and sanitize our hands frequently throughout the session to ensure the safety of the newborn. Additionally, all props used in our newborn studio are specifically designed for babies. We invest in high-quality, hand-knit wraps, custom-made props, and comfortable posers that are safe for newborns. Though these items may be more expensive, the investment ensures that the newborn studio is equipped with the safest props. All designed specifically for the comfort and security of newborns. During the planning stage of your session, we’ll carefully review all the available props to ensure that your preferences align with the safety of your baby.

Handling Newborns with Care: Best Practices for Safe Photography Sessions

In any studio, handling babies with the utmost care is crucial. One of the most important skills in a newborn studio is learning how to wrap babies properly. This requires ensuring that wraps are snug but not restrictive. Newborns have developing circulatory systems, and it’s essential to avoid cutting off circulation or overheating them. A newborn’s circulatory system is still maturing, so regulating their body temperature becomes a priority.

Newborns can often feel colder than older children due to less efficient blood flow, so it’s critical that our newborn studio remains at the right temperature—typically around 78°F. If necessary, I ensure babies are kept warm with cozy wraps or outfits. Properly maintaining the right environment is key to the newborn’s comfort and well-being. Over my 14 years of experience in the newborn studio, I’ve learned the best techniques to ensure babies are comfortable, breathing well, and safe during their session. For example, when posing a newborn on their stomach, we ensure their angle doesn’t obstruct airflow to their nose or mouth.

Tips for Keeping Newborns Calm During a Photoshoot in the Studio

Even with all the preparation, sometimes babies may not settle into the poses we had planned. If the baby becomes uncomfortable or upset, we shift our approach. After attempting a pose 2-3 times, we respect the baby’s cues and adjust the session accordingly, either by doing an all-wrapped session or opting for a session where the baby remains awake. Often times I will cradle the baby, use our baby shusher, and our vibrating pad. While this may not always be what was planned, the priority in my newborn studio is always the baby’s safety and comfort.

By creating a welcoming and secure newborn studio environment, I ensure that the session goes as smoothly as possible, both for the parents and the baby. A newborn studio is more than just a space for photos—it’s a place for memories to be made, while keeping safety and comfort top of mind.

The Importance of Rescheduling: Why Coming to the Newborn Studio While Sick Can Impact Your Session (and other babies)

At our newborn studio, the health and safety of both babies and parents are our top priority. If you or anyone in your household is feeling unwell, we ask that you reschedule your session. Newborns have delicate immune systems, and even a mild illness can pose a risk to their health. We understand that life happens, and we are happy to work with you to find a more suitable time for your session when everyone is feeling better. However, if you arrive at the studio while sick, a $100 fee will be charged to cover the additional cleaning and rescheduling costs. If you are experiencing symptoms such as a cough, cold, fever, or any contagious illness, please stay home and prioritize your well-being. Additionally, neither myself or my team will shoot your session if we are sick or members of our home. This is something we encourage all newborn studios to adapt. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. This helps us maintain a safe and healthy environment for all our clients.
